After being assigned to a Bongolese patient, who has been imprisoned for a cannibalistic murder, an ethno-psychiatrist finds himself entangled in a vast plot involving the French, American and Israeli secret services. The novel is set in an Egyptian-Jewish milieu, providing an opportunity for members of many different currents of the Jewish community to meet and mingle, as a series of incredible adventures follow one another in rapid succession. This is a lively detective novel that will keep readers turning the pages. A question, asked by all the major characters, returns as a leitmotiv all through the book: What does it mean to be Jewish? Tobie Nathan teaches clinical and pathological psychology at the University of Paris-VIII. He is the director of the Centre Georges Devereux.
