Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg
Political Lies Publication date : January 1, 1998
There have always been two notions of politics: `the politics of truth' which favours sincere discourse and respect for the citizen, and `the politics of lies' which regards politics as a game of ruse and deceit and argues that deception is a necessary prerequisite for the winning and wielding of political power.
According to the author, it is the latter notion of politics that prevails today. He then proceeds to analyse the `politics of lies', pointing out in a pertinent, lively style, the false promises, false images, and false roles played by politicians all over the world, regardless of whether they are reputed to be infallible, virtuous, incorruptible, modest, or simply as `friends of the people'.
Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg is a professor at the Law Faculty in Paris. A former minister, he is currently a parliamentary member in the French National Assembly. He is the author of L'Etat spectacle (Flammarion, 1977) and La Droite absolue (Flammarion, 1981).
