A Guide to Ageing Well Memory, Brain, Health, Sexuality, Nutrition Publication date : September 1, 2000

Children are taught how to become adults, but there is no one to prepare adults to become senior citizens. The object of this manual is to help adults learn to age: What should be done to optimise health? How can intellectual capacity be developed? What should be done to avoid the pitfalls of retirement? What can one do to age successfully?
Although many books have been published on retirement and how to manage one’s finances after retirement, this is the first book to examine as wide a range of medical and psychological aspects related to ageing.
Le Guide des Seniors includes a “health” booklet covering about fifty topics, listed in alphabetical order from “Adenoma of the prostrate” to “Vertigo”. The book itself is divided into fifteen chapters:
1. How the body changes: What is the biological basis of ageing? How has modern science worked to increase longevity?
2. The positive effects of physical exercise: Choosing a sport. What sort of medical check-up should be taken first?
3. Eating well in order to live well: How do nutritional needs change with age? Anti-ageing diets. The role played by nutrition in cancer prevention.
4. Combating fatigue and insomnia: How do sleep cycles change with age? How to sleep well.
5. Beauty care: How to avoid the signs of age.
6. Medical care after 50: Prevention. Pain. Medication.
7. Women’s health: Menopause. Hormone-replacement therapy. Alternative medicines.
8. Men’s health: Hormonal changes. Reproduction. Does andropause exist?
9. Sex life: How does desire change with age? Overcoming sexual disorders.
10. Avoiding the pitfalls of retirement: The dangers of retirement. Organising one’s daily life. Adapting to retirement with a partner.
11. Dealing with parents and grandchildren: What to do when parents age and become dependent? What is the new generation of grandparents like?
12. Developing mental resources: What are the effects of age on mental powers? Keeping one’s memory in the best of form.
13. Being at peace with oneself: Does the ageing process result in personality changes? How can stress have a positive effect? Is there such a thing as a predisposition to happiness?
14. Enriching one’s inner life: How does creativity change during a lifetime? Does age lead to wisdom? How can spirituality affect longevity?
15. Successful ageing: What is successful ageing? How? Why?
