Political Philosophies for Our Times A European Itinerary Publication date : September 1, 2005

Through the study of sixteen philosophical topics (the law, the State, democracy, totalitarianism, war, bio-politics, etc.), the authors offer a wide spectrum of philosophical texts and critical presentations illustrating some of the key political issues of our times.
Globalisation, Europeanisation, decentralisation, the resurgence of extreme violence, social exclusion: these notions have shaken such venerable concepts as national sovereignty and led us to address the central issues of politics. How should we go about living together? What are the foundations of authority? Where does control of our own lives begin, and how can we regain it? Europe has a major strength: it is the home of great philosophical traditions and schools of thought which remain very much alive.
Included here are some of Europe’s greatest modern political thinkers whose teachings remain of great relevance for our own time: Carl Schmitt and Leo Strauss, Karl Jaspers and Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault and Emmanuel Lévinas, Jan Patocka, Jürgen Habermas, Paul Ricoeur, Toni Negri and Giorgio Agamben.

Jean Picq is President of Chambers at the French Audit Office. He teaches at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, in Paris.
Yves Cusset is a lecturer in philosophy at the teachers’ college of Besançon and teaches political philosophy at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, in Paris.
